HOW DO I SIGN THIS?!?!

My shortest vlog ever! I make it under unbelieveable two minutes! I'm getting better at it!

Labels:

In my opinion, your mom is right. I find it interesting that both of you use sign with the first letter P. I don't use a letter of P. I use sign as "C." I look forward to seeing what other comment makers would say.. Smile, Aidan

I believe your mom is right.

Ha, ha... better ask Carl S... he is the best person to ask :-)

You can check this link to find sign langauge for Prince and Princess. Link:
http://commtechlab.msu.edu/SITES/ASLWEB/browser.htm

then find word P below then click Prince and Princess. See for yourself.

Your mom is correct. Prince as in sash, princess as in the L-movement. I learned the signs during a performance of Anastasia done by the Hughes Theatre directed by staff at Gallaudet's arts. However, never did learn why the L-movement.

I sign those words in the same way you sign it. :)

I sign those words in the same way how you sign them. :)

You could ask Carl.

I thought I had my signs for Prince and Princess clear in my mind but I was mistaken. I got mixed up with both therefore I will see what others have to say.

I sign the same way as your. My father is 75 yrs old. He don't ever sign for either "Prince" or "Princess" because they were invented by hearing people. My dad disliked to sign these in that way. But my mother is in her 50's now. It means her graudation is 1967, while my father in 1940's something. My mother does signing like your mother said. While I learned the same way like you did. I guess hearing people are messing up with our true language of ASL. Why don't we just spell it out, which it'd show the true of ASL, no matter if it's not a short word? It's many, common interpreters' problems that they can't just spell out long words any more than three or four letters, so in my assuming that they (the hearing) simply made up new signs for any long words.

What do you and others think?

hello, ur signs are right. ur mom's wrong. i use same signs as u do.

Nosh's Right... Check on picture from England...

LOL. I am curious to know what sign you use for "actor" and
"actress". My deaf parents and I use onlu one sign for both. Now it is my turn to answer your question. Actually, I did not know
about two different signs. We use only one sign -- moving the P handsahpe from the left shoulder to the right waistside -- to refer
to either prince or princess.

I spelled them out because I never seen your or your mother's sign of "P" with L movement before in my life. I'm from a Deaf family and we always signed "P" as in a sash for both male and female. We always assume maleness or femaleness is shown in context already, I guess.

The way u signing, it make sense to me, because Prince sign is way of he dress and Princess usually has ribbon across from right shoulder to left hip.

Suggest:

Ask a deaf person from U.K. about what the signs for Prince and Princess. Use these signs from now on since they have royal.
We don't have any royals in the USA !
(I believe you're going to an university in U.K. in the near future and you may be able to learn the signs for Prince and Princess).

Julie B.

I've seen both done like a sash with p-initial, but Princess gets prefaced with the sign for girl. There's probably lots of variations...

Hello there! I have 4 children and naturally we have come across those 2 words countless times in fairy tales, stories, books, etc.! My wife and I have always used the signs that your mom advocates. I sure hope its the right usage, or we'd have to deprogram our 4 kids and re-program them with the right sign--not an easy task!

LOL. Don't blame on me. Your mom is right.

Your Mom is correct. I've always seen Princess and Prince signs that way, too. I've never seen your signs of these two words before.

Reading other people's comments, I find it very interesting that others have different views, some supporting your mom while others supporting yours. Why the difference?

This just shows how much interference hearing people have done so far with ASL. We need to standardize our ASL and remove the signs imposed by hearing people.

Noah,

Or, if you so desire, consult both
Carl Schroeder (see him somewhere on DeafRead and Martin Sternberg's
ASL dictionary. Carl is very
knowledgeable about ASL and Dutch
Sign Language.

Aidan,

I would like to see you sign with a "C" handshape on your vlog.

:-)

LOL, I'm amused by some above comments asking me about whether Noah's mother is correct. In Holland, I learned from early on that princesses always have a pin that represents a royal house. In Gebarentaal we have different signs for prince and princess. OK, when I came to the U.S., I learned that the sign for princess has three "stops"...the second "stop" is supposedly where the pin is.
However, I still prefer signs from Gebarentaal.

ur mom is right i use p for princess and prince sometime signs are tricky

Noah,

I think you have to solve this problem before the Mother’s Day arrives!

I checked on ASL dictionary online that indicates earlier in your comments section. Sadly, this shows that your mother was right. Sigh. Probably someone should criticize the PRINCE and PRINCESS to make sure that they should be switched its signs on the ASL dictionary website. Basically, I agree with your explanations. I really like your theory of how to sign for these words.

You have 23 days to solve till May 13. Probably, it is the cheapest thing to give the gift to your mother that you sacrifice your pride by showing that she is right. Wink.

Good luck.

Your sign seem make sense to me, i do believe you are right. Their individuals from different state had own different sign (prince and princess.) Interesting!

ur sign is right.

I sign the same way your mom signs for the words "prince" and "princess." Sorry, friend.

- Renee

Here's a video (click here of signs in Gebarentaal (Dutch Sign Language) for PRINCE AND PRINCESS.

I think I know why you became confused with the sign for Princess, Noah. It's easy to get confused because we live in a generation and society that places sashes from the shoulder to the hip on our homecoming princesses and her court, or the Teen or Miss America pageant competitors. They are always given a sash with their crown, flowers and capes.

In Disney movies, the hero or Prince, usually wears a cape that buttons from one side to the other.

Blame the American images for the confusion in the signs. ;)

Aidan, why C?

Carl, How about giving us another lesson on actors and actress?

Noah, thanks for bringing it up cuz I got that wrong too! :( Me deaf family tsk tsk

Hi ,In my opinion, You are right because I have noticed that a princess use a long ribbon from left shoulder to right hip and a prince use a firm uniform with three buttons(left shoulder, right shoulder and right upper hip)... Does that make sense to you ?? KH

Noah, thanks for bringing it up, I didn't know what the sign for Princess was so that was an educational thing for me. Normally, I would fingerspell it to my daughter so now I know the sign. thanks! Your T-shirt rocks!

To everyone-
Thank you for your insightful comments!

Aidan-
I remember seeing someone signing like you do. Can you show me how you differ “Prince” from “Princess” with “c” sign? Or, do you use a same sign for both?

Dennis-
Thank you for that link!

Dianrez-
Check out Carl’s vComment for his explanation about “l-movement”. Maybe that’s why.

Charles L. Harper-
Good point about the hearing making up new signs. It is true with many signs.

PANY Lighthouse-
Good point. I wonder how we sign Prince and Princess in BSL.

Jean Boutcher-
Well, well. I have never thought of that. I guess I have been using one sign for both actor and actress (“act”+ “person”). How about you?

Brian Lievens-
True about context… that’s what I do with “actor” and “actress” (see my comment to Jean above).

Julie B.-
Yeah! I want to know how to sign these words in BSL, but I probably would have to wait until this fall.

BEG-
Yeah, I have seen some people doing that.

Deaf Kitchen-
See David Martin’s vComment… now you don’t have to worry! :-)

Mishkazena-
Yes… why the difference? I will discuss that in my follow-up vlog.

NavyBeagle-
I did what you suggested! And, she really likes my gift :-)

Mochame-
Why the difference???

David A. Martin-
I guess your source has the strongest voice of all comments. Thank you for sharing!

Renee-
Don’t worry, I’m done with grieving (just kidding).

Carl-
I agree with you. Should we just follow Gebarentaal for these words instead? Sounds good :-)

LaRodna-
Excellent theory! Yes, I blame the American images for making me all confused! Thank you for pointing out a thing I can blame on for my confusion.

C-
Yeah… if anybody has another sign for “actor” and “actress”… show us!

Kathy Hughes-
I agree with you, but Carl also brings up a good point. Watch his vComment. I think it all depends on which country we observe.

Michele-
Let's get this party started, indeed.

I recalled someone mentioned if we use any sign with three different locations (from one shoulder to another shoulder to hip), that is not ASL rule. That is why we don't see any sign (except CHINA because we got the sign from China) that has three signs. Many of them have either one or two locations.

At one time, I signed Martin Luther King (MLK), the location was from the shoulder (M) to tummy (L) to hip (K). Someone criticized and said that broke ASL rule. It should not have three different locations. Suggested, I should spell MLK in neutral location.

So I always use same sign for both prince and princess (from shoulder to hip).

I believe your mother is right!!

Have you ever thought about the signs for messiah, lord and king? Wouldn't it makes sense to sign prince the same way your mom does?

I usually let the lord show me the best way to sign the word. This is what he showed me today.

In Christ's love,
Jesus's servant

Hi!
I must admit I've never seen those signs for prince and princess..like some of others, I'm from a deaf family..we tend to sign the same for both of them though I don't appreciate initialized signs very much. Yeah, I like the 'C' sign. Can say girl, 'C' sign and boy 'C' sign.

:)
Hetty
