ASL Storytelling: The Unlucky Man
Once there was a man who lived in a beautiful log cabin. He seemed to have everything but...
Finally, I'm back. I have been so busy with finals, graduating from high school, and preparing for my trip to Romania and Moldova. I hope to update my blog more often this time. God bless!

A really good "Aesopic" fable!
I wish all hearing parents and hearing teachers in schools for the deaf would learn to tell stories in ASL like you.
By the way, enjoy your European
journey.

Boy! That guy was surely one unlucky fellow! Couldn't see the riches and beauty before him. Gulp! He got eaten up in the end!
How often we overlook the good things around us because we are searching for some illusion.
Beautiful story, Noah.
Where did you find it?

Very similar "joke" made by that adorable child in a movie "The Pursuit of Happyness" which goes somewhat like this:
A man was sitting on top of his home while there was a flood going on. A boat came around and offered to give him a ride to safety. The man declined and said: "God will save me." So the boat went away... then a helicopter came around and offered him a lift.. again the man declined and recited; "God will save me."... so the helicopter flew away.
And the flood kept going up... and drowned the man.
Upon his arrival to the heaven, the man asked God why He hadn't saved him? God's reply was: "I did! I sent you a boat and helicopter!"

Although the man was foolish not to see the wonderful things that were happening to him, perhaps he did do the right thing in the end. He had promised the wolf and the tree that he would pose their questions to God. Having done so, he may have been morally obligated to return to them with God's answer.
Legally speaking, such promises are not enforceable. But morally, once having made those promises, he was honor-bound to return with answers. Had he stayed with the beautiful woman, he would have failed in this duty to the wolf and the tree. Alternately, had he taken the chest, he might not have been able to reach the wolf with such a heavy load.
But perhaps this reads too much into the fable. But I think that this gloss does show how it can be difficult to reconcile one's luck with the obligations that we have to give of ourselves to others.
